Unit Goals

After learning the unit, students are expected to be able

·to understand Kingsley Amis’s characterization of “Dixon”in Lucky Jim ,

·to appreciate Amis’s distinctive writing style of humor and satire reflected in the text,

·to reflect on the spirit of “The Angry Young Men”in John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger ,

·to master the useful expressions in the writings, and

·to improve language proficiency and critical thinking through the content of this unit.

Before You Read

1.Familiarize yourself with the basic storyline of the whole novel Lucky Jim , and make an analysis of the position and function of the selected chapter in the textbook.
