Unit Goals

After learning the unit, students are expected to be able

·to understand the wonder and potential danger of science,

·to know Mary Shelley and her major concerns,

·to identify science fiction as a literary genre,

·to appreciate G.H.Wells and his writing styles,

·to master the useful expressions in the writings, and

·to improve language proficiency and critical thinking through the content of this unit.

Before You Read

1.Discuss the following questions with your partner.

1)What’s amazing about science and technology? Give examples.

2)Do you think science is a double-edged sword? Why or why not?

3)Have you ever read a science fiction novel or watched a science fiction movie? What are some typical characteristics of this genre?

4)Do you agree with the opinion “Innocence about science is the worst crime today”? Support your views with reasons.

5)How should human beings make use of science and technology for their own good instead of destroying them?

2.Form groups of three or four students.Try to find, on the Internet or in the library, information about Mary Shelley and her famous science fiction.Prepare a presentation about the author and her writing styles and special concerns.
