Unit Goals

After learning the unit, students are expected to be able

·to understand the significance of choice in one’s life,

·to know Charlotte Bront? and her novels,

·to identify the satire and wit in W.Somerset Maugham’s works,

·to learn the useful words and expressions in the writings, and

·to improve language proficiency and critical thinking through the content of this unit.

Before You Read

1.Think about the following topics and get ready to share your ideas with your peers in class.

1)Do you have problems in making a choice? What was the most successful choice you have ever made?

2)Some life choices are easier to make than others.And yet, the difficult choices are the most character-defining.How could we make the right choice when we are faced with many choices?

2.Write down the most important advice you have learnt from your parents or friends and then share it with your classmates.
