Unit Goals

After learning the unit, students are expected to be able

·to know Guy de Maupassant as a master short story writer and his unique writing techniques,

·to understand the skillful design of the plot,

·to identify the ironies in the story,

·to understand the themes and significance of the story,

·to enlarge English vocabulary and reinforce grammatical knowledge, and

·to improve language proficiency and critical thinking through the content of this unit.

Before You Read

1.Form groups of three or four students.Try to find information about Guy de Maupassant and his famous stories such as “The Necklace”.Prepare a presentation of ten minutes about one of his short stories you like best and give reasons why you like it.

2.Do some research on the social and literary context when the story in Text A was written to better understand the significance of the story.
