●Verbal Greetings

Once you have been introduced to someone,the next time you meet each other it is important to greet him/her.We also greet people when we leave people.There are various ways to greet people in formal and informal situations in English (as in all languages).

■Formal Greetings:When Arriving

◇Good morning / afternoon / evening.

◇Good day Sir / Madam (very formal).

◇Hello (name),how are you?

■Informal Greetings:When Arriving

◇Hi / Hello.

◇How are you doing? (very informal)

◇What’s up? (very informal)

◇How are you?

The question “How are you?” or “What’s up?” doesn’t necessarily need to respond.If you want to respond,the following phrases are usually used:

◇Fine / Great (informal).

◇Very well,thank you.And you? (formal)

■Formal Greetings: When Departing

◇Goodbye.

◇It was a pleasure seeing you.

◇Good night.(after 8 p.m.)

■Informal Greetings:When Departing

◇Later.(very informal)

◇Goodbye / Bye.

◇See you (later).
